The Day The Temperature Rose 103 Degrees

Travel was impacted in the Northeast and a Major League Baseball home opener was postponed as yet another round of snowfall fell on the region Monday.

Roads were slick from Maryland to New England as the snow fell steadily Monday morning, and officials urged drivers to be extra cautious during the morning commute. Many schools are already closed for spring break in some of the areas hit by the winter weather, but the snowfall caused additional districts to cancel or delay Monday's classes.

At New York's LaGuardia Airport, where snow fell at rates as high as two inches per hour, nearly 200 flights were canceled, according to the flight-tracking website FlightAware. Dozens of cancellations were also reported at the New York area's John F. Kennedy and Newark Liberty airports.

Both the New Jersey Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway had reduced speed limits on Monday morning, NJ.com reported. Still, dozens of crashes and spinouts were reported on New Jersey roads Monday morning, according to the Associated Press.

In Pennsylvania, more than 17,000 homes and businesses were in the dark by mid-morning Monday, according to PowerOutage.us.

Meanwhile, in the Bronx, the New York Yankees' home opener against the Tampa Bay Rays was postponed until Tuesday at 4:05 p.m. EDT, the team announced Monday morning. Snow fell heavily at Yankee Stadium in the morning hours, and team officials decided conditions would not improve enough in time for the scheduled 1:05 p.m. first pitch.

It was New York City's biggest April snowfall since April 6, 1982, which was also the scheduled date of a Yankees home opener. The game that day, against the Texas Rangers, was also postponed.

"It’s April now," Yankees fan and Harlem resident Theodore Davis told the New York Post. "We’re supposed to have April showers, not snow."

In Queens, the New York Mets also announced their game Monday night against the Philadelphia Phillies was postponed because of the snow. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on July 9.
