Winter Storm Fisher brought a rare blanket of snow to parts of the the Arizona and New Mexico desert.

Winter Storm Fisher brought a rare blanket of snow to parts of the the Arizona and New Mexico desert, coating cactuses and turning the landscape into a winter wonderland. The Tucson, Arizona, area received up to six inches of snow in some locations, and Phoenix saw an overnight low of 30 degrees on Wednesday, the lowest temperature in five years. Saguaro National Park and the Grand Canyon received snowfall and Tucson resident Jessica Howard called the view "magical" in an interview with the Associated Press.

The storm wasn't magical for everyone, however, as Winter Storm Fisher caused hundreds of accidents in the Southwest and Southern Plains, including a 21-vehicle pileup in Oklahoma Wednesday night.

State transportation officials warned residents in Oklahoma against driving on Thursday morning, and many schools across the state were closed. Winter storm warnings have been issued from central Oklahoma into northwest Texas, including Oklahoma City and Wichita Falls, Texas, with winter weather advisories surrounding the area from west-central Texas into eastern Oklahoma and far northwest Arkansas.

Four people died in storm-related wrecks in Oklahoma on Wednesday and Thursday. Karen Marie Price, 63, of Eufaula, was killed Wednesday when her pickup truck collided with a tractor-trailer on State Highway 9A in Pittsburg County, according to NewsOK. Two Texas residents, Daniel Ellison, 24, of Burleson, and Erica Womack, 18, of Fort Worth, were killed early Thursday near Davis, Oklahoma, after the car they were riding in slid into a barrier after slipping on an ice patch of road.

Ramos Francis, 76-year-old man from Chickasha, died Thursday morning after his vehicle spun out of control and struck a tree. On Lake Road in Shawnee, Norman Hanks, 82, was killed when his car hit a pickup truck Wednesday evening after veering into oncoming traffic. Two others were injured in the crash and hospitalized.

Two were reported were reported dead in New Mexico after weather-related automobile accidents. A tow truck driver was killed early Wednesday after he was hit by a tractor-trailer, AP reported. A 12-year-old boy was also killed in a car accident Monday evening south of Cuba, New Mexico.

The storm will continue to bring a wintry mess to parts of Oklahoma and northwest Texas through Thursday night.
