Kai brought feet of snow to the West and a damaging ice storm to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

Winter Storm Kai spread snow from the Mountain West to the northern Plains and also brought damaging ice to the northern Great Lakes in the first few days of February 2019.

Kai was named early Feb. 2, 2019, when the area of the United States that was under a winter storm warning exceeded the areal criteria of at least 400,000 square kilometers (154,440 square miles).

Kai first brought heavy rain and mountain snow to California Friday, Feb. 1, into Saturday, Feb. 2. Up to 6 feet of snow piled up in 24 hours at June Mountain Ski Area in California.

On Sunday, Feb. 3, Alpena, Michigan, reported 0.17 inches of ice while Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, picked up 0.10 inches of ice.

Snow and wind also affected the northern Rockies and northern Plains from Feb. 3-4. Up to 10 inches of snow was measured in Minot and Williston, North Dakota.

Kai finished up by bring damaging ice accumulations to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan on Feb. 4. The ice knocked down tree branches, caused power outages and contributed to numerous accidents.

  • Montana: 12.1 inches near Island Park (Black Bear SNOTEL 8,100 feet elevation); 5 to 6 inches in Butte
  • North Dakota: 12 inches near Fort Union Trading; 10 inches in Minot and Williston; 6.7 inches in Grand Forks
  • Nevada: 9 inches near Incline Village (Diamond Peak Ski Area)
  • Utah: 13 inches near Almo (George Creek SNOTEL)
  • Wisconsin: 0.38 inches ice near Sanborn
  • Wyoming: 10.4 inches near Driggs (Philips Bench SNOTEL); 9 inches in Jackson Hole
