Bomb Cyclone Scraped Southeastern New England With High Winds, Snow

At a Glance

  • A bomb cyclone scraped southeastern New England.
  • High winds and some snow accompanied this system.
  • The rest of the East Coast did not feel the effects of this storm.

Low pressure off the East Coast intensified into a bomb cyclone, but spared much of the East Coast with the exception of scraping southeast New England where high winds and snow was reported.

A strong jet stream disturbance with colder air moved across the Great Lakes and Northeast. The jet stream disturbance brought light rain and snow to the region.

But the bigger story is a strengthening area of low pressure off the East Coast. The central pressure of this system plunged 40 millibars from Friday morning to early Saturday. This satisfies the criteria for bombogenesis, which occurs when the central pressure of areas of low pressure drop at least 24 millibars in 24 hours.

However, the track of the bomb cyclone was far enough east to prevent it from bringing significant impacts to most of the Northeast, except parts of southeastern New England.
