Flying over the some of the most remote places on Earth you may be greeted with a puzzling sight.

The Desert Sunlight solar project, located near Joshua Tree National Park in the Mojave Desert, is a 550-megawatt power station, making it the world's largest, says USA Today. The station’s power-generating abilities are impressive, as it can generate enough power for 160,000 average California homes.

Countries around the globe are adopting more sustainable energy methods, solar being one of the primary choices. In 2010, Germany topped the leaderboard in solar power consumption, with 9,785 megawatts, according to Solar Energy Facts.

As we advance into the future, hundreds of these power stations are sure to pop up, turning our landscapes into a jumble of powerful puzzle pieces.
