Canary Islands Beach Is Strewn With What Looks Like Popcorn

A bay in Spain's Canary Islands is strewn with what looks strikingly like popcorn.

Punta Lala is a stretch of beach about an hours walk from Corralejo, a town on the island of Fuerteventura. Affectionately nicknamed Popcorn Beach or Popcorn Bay, the beach has become a hot spot for tourists to capture images for social media.

The faux popcorn is actually small pieces of white coral that have washed up on the beach. The mix of the white coral, black volcanic rock and regular old sand gives the beach an appearance of salt and pepper from a distance.

Needless to say, laying on the beach can't exactly be comfortable considering the sometimes large pieces of coral. Those tempted to take a bite out of the seemingly appetizing morsels should beware of chipping a tooth.

The Canary Islands is a Spanish archipelago located off the coast of northwestern Africa and is famous for its black and white beaches. Fuerteventura is the second largest island in the archipelago. The largest island, Tenerife, is towered over by the sometimes active Mt. Teide volcano.
