For the 14th consecutive year, Wellcome Images has selected the photos that best show science with an artistic touch.

A panel of judges picked more than a dozen images as the finalists, which were announced last week, according to Wellcome's website. Each of the finalists can be seen in the gallery at the top of this page.

"The breathtaking riches of the imagery that science generates are so important in telling stories about research and helping us to understand often abstract concepts," Adam Rutherford, British geneticist, author and broadcaster, said in a statement.

The images depict subjects both microscopic and large, and they will soon be on display at several science centers around Great Britain. They will also travel overseas to be on display at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.
