February marks the final full month of winter which brings to mind the emergence of spring is just around the corner, allowing some parts of the U.S. to gradually shed heavy coats and jackets and trade them for shorts and t-shirts.

If you are tired of winter's cold, we have a visual look at the transition to spring that might warm you up a bit until the season finally arrives. Let's step through this progression using the latest 30-year normal data (1991-2020) from NOAA for February, March, April and May.

High Temperatures

  • Nation's northern half: In most areas, temperatures rise from the 20s, 30s and 40s in February to the 50s and 60s by April, and 60s and 70s in May.
  • Southern states: February's 50s and 60s in much of the region along with 70s in Florida and South Texas rise to the 70s and 80s by April and May in most areas. Even a few 90s creep in across the Texas Rio Grande region in May.
  • West: The region's rise in average temperature is more complicated given the Rockies higher terrain and the influence of the Pacific Ocean near the West Coast, but you can see the general warmer trend in the region below. Most of the interior West sees 60s and 70s by May, though the Rockies remain in the 50s. The Desert Southwest grows the hottest with highs jumping from the 70s in February to the 90s by May.
