Mesmerizing candle ice forms in late winter or early spring when warming temperatures and sunlight cause ice on lakes and rivers to melt from the inside out. Instead of melting evenly, the ice separates into vertical, candle-like columns as water drains between the crystals. Even though it can still look solid, candle ice is extremely weak and dangerous.
