Flash Floods Drench Mississippi's Gulf Coast (PHOTOS)

Torrential rains sparked flash flooding along Mississippi's Gulf Coast, swamping the towns of Gulfport and Biloxi. Residents were told to stay off the roads, while Biloxi Police Chief John Miller said that residents in flood-prone areas should evacuate their homes as floodwaters continue to rise.

Flooded roadways forced school delays and closures as some locations saw up to 10 inches of rain in a short period of time. Gulfport Mayor Billy Hewes declared a state of emergency.

The City of Biloxi's Facebook page reported 2.5 inches of standing water on U.S. 90. Roads were closed throughout town, and Harrison County Fire Chief Pat Sullivan reported that a house fire was caused by lightning.
