Hurricane Earl made landfall early Thursday morning near Belize City.

Earl was upgraded to a Category 1 hurricane late Wednesday afternoon before hitting Belize with sustained winds of 80 mph. In preparation, residents in its path were battening down the hatches Wednesday morning before the first bands of rain arrived later in the afternoon.

As the storm pushed through the Caribbean, it was responsible for at least six deaths in the Dominican Republic when strong winds and heavy rainfall downed power lines onto a bus. Twelve more injuries were reported on the bus, which burst into flames on the way back from a beach excursion.

Impacts were also felt in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands as Earl moved westward. Events were canceled and boaters were urged to stay off the water until the storm passed, but impacts were mostly minimal in those areas.
