Hurricane Odile roared into Baja California on Sunday night, causing extensive damage across the scenic peninsula. At luxury hotels in Cabo San Lucas, windows were blown out, structures were destroyed and lower floors were flooded, while entire neighborhoods were leveled and trees and power lines were toppled across Los Cabos.

After the storm passed, residents in local neighborhoods combed through the rubble of destroyed houses to retrieve belongings while in Cabo San Lucas. Looters grabbed everything they could carry at several stores along the tourist strip before troops intervened.

With nearby airports not operational, the Mexican government started the long task of airlifting as many as 30,000 tourists to safety on Tuesday.

Emergency officials reported that 135 people were treated for minor injuries from flying glass or falling objects, but there were no serious injuries or deaths so far.

In Colonia Unidad Real, a neighborhood that sprang up years ago in a former creek bed, hundreds of homes were damaged or destroyed with debris scattered everywhere.

Odile made landfall near Cabo San Lucas late Sunday night as a powerful Category 3 hurricane with winds gusting over 100 mph.
