Survivors of a large earthquake in southern Japan reluctantly went into shelters as cold overnight temperatures made it difficult to sleep outside on lawns and sidewalks. As the ground continues to shake, they're fearful that more disaster could be coming.

A pair of strong earthquakes shook Japan's Kyushu Island last week, killing at least 45 people and injuring about 1,100. A 7.0 magnitude temblor Saturday night had virtually the same epicenter as Thursday's deadly, damaging 6.2 foreshock.

The epicenter of Saturday's quake was in Kumamoto prefecture, as was the foreshock. Hundreds of aftershocks hit Kyushu Island after the main quake.

According to local police, Saturday's quake killed 36 people. Thursday's tremor left nine dead. As of Tuesday, some 100,000 residents were still sleeping in cars or shelters, afraid to go home as aftershocks persisted.

Buildings collapsed, trapping residents and causing widespread damage. Local media reported that nearly 200,000 homes were without power and an estimated 400,000 households were without running water. The earthquake also triggered a major landslide in Minam Aso, partially cutting off a town that required emergency airdropped supplies.

Low temperatures are expected to be in the mid-40s in Kumamoto city overnight Tuesday, continuing a trend of cooler weather in the area that has pushed many residents back into shelters or cars for warmth.
