Typhoon Megi dealt a serious blow to Taiwan and southeastern China, buffeting the former with strong winds before swamping the latter with widespread flooding.

At least six people were killed and 23 are still missing in a pair of Chinese villages Thursday after landslides were triggered by Megi's heavy rainfall. Heavy equipment was brought in to dig through the rubble as officials hoped to find survivors.

The storm has been responsible for at least 14 deaths – seven in Taiwan and seven in China – and left more than 600 people injured in Taiwan alone. Crews were still working Wednesday to restore power to about a million customers; some 4.1 million homes and businesses in Taiwan were in the dark after Megi struck.

All across Taiwan, shelters were opened to house residents who evacuated from their homes, and more than 35,000 soldiers were put on alert to help with disaster relief, should they be needed. Megi was the third typhoon to hit the island this month, and some residents still hadn't completed their cleanup from the last two.
