Severe weather and flooding rains created a dangerous situation for Californians this week, as several waves of rain and snow came ashore and triggered mudslides.

Many roads were closed due to flooding or debris flows as the storms intensified, and residents fortified their properties with sandbags and other means, especially in areas where recent burn scars from wildfires made mudslides more likely. Southern California bore the brunt of the heavy rainfall, but even the Bay Area reported road closures, weather-related accidents and downed trees as a result of the storms.

The storms also had a snowy side, which was great news for the higher elevations but problematic in other areas. In Spokane, a United Airlines Boeing 737 bound for Denver slid off the runway and into a snowbank on Tuesday morning. There were no injuries reported, but the taxiway was closed for hours after the incident.

Areas south of Flagstaff reported as much as 30 inches of snow, and the city's schools were closed for three consecutive days as roadways remained dangerous.
