Winter Storm Echo, the fifth named storm of the 2015-16 winter weather season, lashed the West and Northern Plains with more than two feet of snow in some areas, which hindered travel and knocked out power to thousands.

Some areas, like Salt Lake City, received the first major snowfall of the year from Echo. The wintry weather was great news for the ski resorts, but it also slowed travel to a halt in some areas, and more than 10,000 Utahns lost power.

On Tuesday, the snowfall reached the Denver area, creating a mess on the city's roadways and canceling more than 350 flights. The storm pushed further east on Wednesday, shutting down roads and schools in the Dakotas.

Further west, the storm system left behind wind damage, flooding and mudslides along the West Coast. Portions of Interstate 5 in Southern California were closed over the weekend when a mudslide covered the freeway north of Los Angeles. Two people were killed in a car accident that was blamed on rainy weather conditions in California, officials said.

A third death was reported in Minnesota Wednesday due to a car accident on icy roads in the Princeton area.
