Winter Storm Ilias, in Pictures

Winter Storm Ilias impacted at least a dozen states with snow and ice that slowed travel and closed many schools in the middle of the week.

The storm led to widespread gridlock in the Washington D.C. area Wednesday night after snow fell on roadways and quickly froze. After the streets turned icy, motorists were unable to navigate over hills, and many drivers ditched their cars at the bottom of interstates' off-ramps, unable to move them any further.

Officials said there were more than 100 accidents in D.C. and northern Virginia Wednesday night, and hundreds of drivers were stranded or endured six-hour drive times or longer. For many, these commutes lasted well into the early-morning hours Thursday.

The storm's impacts were felt in a tragic way when several staffers from the Ben Carson presidential campaign were injured in a car crash in Iowa, and one person was killed. Officials said 25-year-old Braden Joplin, a volunteer with the campaign, died when the van in which he was riding hit a patch of ice and flipped onto its side. Dr. Carson canceled all scheduled events Tuesday after learning of the accident.

Another death was reported Wednesday morning when 19-year-old James Cryder was driving a car that hit a patch of ice and skidded off the road in Knox County, Tennessee. Officials said passenger Jacob Raley, 20, survived the accident but was injured.
