The American territories offer visitors exotic island vacations without even needing a passport. Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the United States, and it is known for its sandy beaches, warm blue waters and excellent diving sites. There are even opportunities to go swimming with green turtles at the Puerto Rican Tamarindo Beach. Also not to miss is St. John, the largest of the US Virgin Islands. About two-thirds of this island has been designated a national park.

Animal-lovers should head to San Juan Island in Washington, where visitors can go whale watching and spot orca whales at Lime Kiln Point State Park. The island also boasts beautiful forests and historical sites, as well as both a lavender farm and an alpaca farm that are open to visitors. Birdwatchers can also visit the Minnesota’s two small islands in Mille Lacs Lake for an opportunity to see one of only four breeding colonies of the common tern, a threatened bird species.
