Players and spectators will want to keep an umbrella or poncho handy as golf's final major gets underway later this week in Northern Ireland.

Fast Facts

  • The 153rd edition of The Open Championship is being hosted at Royal Portrush Golf Club on the Northern Ireland coast, which is about a 60-mile drive northwest of Belfast.
  • Royal Portrush has hosted the tournament twice before in 2019 and 1951. Shane Lowry won the 2019 Open Championship.
  • A combined 156 professional and amateur golfers will take part in the tournament when it begins Thursday. The winner will hoist the famed Claret Jug after Sunday's final round.

Forecast

Weather conditions are shaping up to what you might think of experiencing in Northern Ireland: showers, breezy and temperatures in the 60s.

  • Thursday: Rain, perhaps a clap of thunder, appears likely as a weak frontal system moves in. Temperatures will hover in the 60s much of the day with winds out of the south-southeast at 10 to 15 mph.
  • Friday: The chance of rain appears less likely than on Thursday, but lingering moisture from the low might kick off some hit-or-miss showers as temperatures remain in the 60s most of the day.
  • Weekend: Another low-pressure system will arrive for Saturday and Sunday, but forecast details on its exact track and timing are still a bit uncertain. What we do know is that rain showers are possible for at least parts of the weekend as that low swirls through. Breezy conditions can be expected at times with temperatures once again in the 60s.
