Warnings about hot weather greeted fans attending the second round of the 124th U.S. Open golf championship in Pinehurst, North Carolina, on Friday.

A large leaderboard near the 9th green read, “Extreme heat today. Please take precautions and drink plenty of water.” The message was also posted on the tournament’s website.

Temperatures were in the low 90s at Pinehurst No. 2 on Friday with light wind. Similar conditions were forecast for the weekend. The tournament is scheduled to conclude Sunday evening.

Fans are allowed to bring empty, reusable plastic water bottles onto the grounds, according to the United States Golf Association. There are several water stations around the course. Fans were encouraged to bring their own sunscreen.

The world’s best golfers were contending not just with the heat, but a demanding course. World No.1 Scottie Scheffler finished his second round at 5 over par, in danger of missing the cut.

This is Pinehurst's fourth time hosting the U.S. Open, which is always played the third week in June, almost guaranteeing hot weather regardless of where it's played. Last year's tournament, won by Wyndham Clark, was played at L.A. Country Club, while the year before saw Matthew Fitzpatrick triumph in the cooler climate of The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts.
