May 4th, as you’ve likely heard, has become Star Wars Day for fans of the movies, who love saying “May the fourth be with you” (a play on the iconic phrase “may the force be with you”). When runner Chris Watson realized that this year’s Toronto Marathon would be taking place on May 4th, he knew it was the perfect moment to attempt to break a world record: The Guinness World Record for fastest marathon run dressed as a Star Wars character (yes, it’s a thing).

Dressed as Obi-Wan Kenobi, replete with brown cloak, beard and light-saber, Watson was certainly more encumbered than most of the racers. However, the Toronto weather cooperated to keep things from getting too sweltering, with temperatures staying in the upper 40s and 50s through the day beneath overcast skies. Even with the fairly cooperative weather, Watson noted that the costume did make things difficult, writing on social media that “I underestimated just how hot it would get under the costume.”

According to Watson, he finished the race faster than the current posted world record, which means that, pending ratification from Guinness, he will now be known as the world record fastest marathon ran in a Star Wars costume. While Obi-Wan memorably commands Luke Skywalker to “Run, Luke! Run!” in the Star Wars movies, on this May 4th, it was Kenobi who was doing the running.
