The woman, who asked to remain unidentified, was running with her husband in the northwestern part of the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. The couple were separated and she was alone when she turned a corner and was confronted by a bear and its two cubs, reported Fox News.

"The bear attacked her, defending her babies, seeing her as a threat," said senior conservation law enforcement officer Mark Sledge.

The woman managed to flag down a driver and was taken to the hospital. At the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage, officials reported the victim was in stable condition on Monday, said CNN. She suffered lacerations to her neck, arms and legs.

"It was very quick, and she didn't remember much [of the attack]," said Maj. Angela Webb, a spokeswoman for the Air Force.

To survive a bear attack if it can't be avoided, Outside Magazine recommends carrying bear spray and slowly backing away from a surprise encounter rather than running.
