Skydiving is not for the faint-hearted, but combining fireworks with a freefall jump is another level of extreme.

With giant sticks of gunpowder strapped to their ankles, the Fastrax skydiving team performs a fireworks show like no other. The skydivers activate the sparks as they fall through the air from 13,500 feet at a speed of up to 120 mph. As they fall through the dark, their fireworks ignite to create a stunning pyrotechnics show.

Though jumping from a plane itself is daring, Team Fastrax sought more adventure. Of the 30 people on the team, only 10 partake in the pyrotechnics. Fastrax team leader John Hart said that divers must have done 2,000 jumps to even be considered for the special team.

“It’s pretty cool how we can actually create firework shows as we jump,” Hart said. “It all started when we were thinking about what could set us apart as a skydiving team.”

While the display is stunning, there are significant risks. The fireworks burn at 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit for about 45 seconds each. At 5,000 feet, each member of the team must carefully release their parachute to avoid catching fire from the flames.

“The temperature goes up by six degrees just from the heat of the pyrotechnics and it is easy to be disoriented once the pyrotechnics have gone out,” said Hart. “You need excellent freefall skills and stability. Being picked for the pyro team is the pinnacle of skydiving.”

Despite the dangers, the divers love the thrill and travel around the world to perform to awe-struck crowds at special events.
