“I’ve never really gotten that feeling anywhere else in the world. I can’t explain it. Those mountains just keep drawing me back.”

That’s how 21-year-old photographer Jeff Lewis describes Yosemite National Park, and it’s what’s inspired him to return there over and over again to take pictures. Those trips resulted in some awe-inspiring images of Yosemite during winter, photos showcased in the slideshow above.

“I’ve probably been about 20 times,” Lewis told weather.com about his journeys to Yosemite. “Each time I try to bring back something that represents the conditions that I experienced out there.” If Lewis gets his way, he sees as much weather as he can.

It makes sense given his field of study: He’s a meteorology major at the University of California, Los Angeles. Plus, he has a passion for photography. He loves capturing in still frames how the weather plays off the park’s natural wonders. “I try to go when there is going to be a snowstorm,” he said. “I’ve actually cancelled trips when there are clear skies. You never see the same thing twice.”

Talking to Lewis, you get the sense he’s someone who loves being outdoors, who would suffer frigid cold or battle pummeling hail for the right shot. He confirms as much, relaying tales of nearly frozen limbs and clothing layered five times over during an overnight in a tent in below-zero temperatures.

He tends to shoot at night or in the early morning hours — it’s when the best light is. And he hopes to continue pursuing photography after graduation.

No doubt Yosemite will remain a part of his portfolio. “I remember the first time I went,” Lewis said. “I don’t really know how to put it into words, but it was just a place that when I left, all I could think about was the next time I could be back.”
