The Arctic and Antarctic present some of the most challenging and dangerous environments of any location on Earth - and before modern technology like airplanes and GPS, voyages to the two poles could easily turn deadly.

The men who traveled to the northernmost and southernmost tips of the world at the turn of the twentieth century were motivated by nationalism, fame, and scientific enterprise. Many reveled in the adventure of traveling to unknown lands that few had seen before, places that had no reliable maps and were almost impossible to access.

In the Arctic, explorers searched for the Northwest Passage, a sea route through the Arctic Ocean, for decades. According to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen was the first to navigate the Northwest Passage, and no one would replicate the journey fro another 34 years.

According to Joan Boothe, the author of The Storied Ice: Exploration, Discovery, and Adventure in Antarctica's Peninsula Region, the explorers attempting to traverse Antarctica during the Heroic Age (1897 to 1916) faced everything from scurvy to frostbite to psychological problems.

"You were most likely to survive if you were prepared and knew what you were doing," Boothe said in an interview with Weather.com. "But even then you might fail. And if you were not careful and took risks, you still might make it."

Oftentimes, Boothe said, it came down to luck. In 1911, for example, the British Captain Robert Falcon Scott and the Norwegian Captain Roald Amundsen both set off to try and reach the South Pole first. Not only did Amundsen reach the Pole before Scott, but Scott's entire team also died on the return journey, according to BBC History.

During the Heroic Age of Antarctic exploration, 17 men died, and many others dealt with injuries and illness.

Apart from not always knowing where they were going and struggling to find nutritious food, the men had to deal with the incredibly harsh climate. Antarctica is the largest desert and the windiest continent in the world.

"A particular feature of the Antarctic is what are called katabatic winds, which are gravity driven winds, coming roaring off the polar plateau toward the coast at speeds that at their peak reach up to 200 mph," Boothe said.

According to the University of Wisconsin - Madisona wind gust of 199 mph was clocked in July 1972. These winds pick up the snow and turn it into a swirling blizzard, even without any precipitation falling.

Antarctica is also home to the coldest temperature ever recorded on Earth. The temperature dipped to -128.6 degrees at Vostok on July 21, 1983.

Modern expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic benefit greatly from new technology, and also from the work of the men who went before them, braving the elements to map out the unknown.
