It makes sense that most of Matt Georges photos are “winter and snow oriented.” The photographer grew up in the French Alps.

“I shoot in cities where it is possible to snowboard or I got out in the wild, in the backcountry, to find fresh and untracked snow,” he told weather.com. “We pretty much follow snowstorms and try to be on location just after a big snowfall.”

In order to do so Georges is constantly following weather forecasts to be aware of snow conditions.

“I really enjoy shooting in a storm, even if it’s tough! I feel like you can be really creative with fog, snowflakes and low visibility,” said Georges, who prefers less than perfect conditions. “Blue sky and white snow is also good, but I find it a little boring at the end of the day, unless it’s golden hours and shadows are dancing around the landscape.”

But, shooting snowboarders during snowstorms has its challenges, and Georges always puts safety first.

“The biggest challenge is to stay safe and warm in the mountains. We are out there in the wild, most of the time with no phone signal far away from any civilization. Days can be really cold and wet, and bags are heavy to carry in the deep snow.”

The photographer, who grew up skateboarding, got his first job as an art director at a national skateboard and snowboard magazine. After a few other jobs at magazines, Georges decided to pursue his action-photography hobby full time.

While Georges would “rather go to new destinations” then travel to places he’s already been, he really enjoys shooting in Japan, Siberia and Scandinavia.
