Hermine's Wrath Felt From Florida Up the East Coast (PHOTOS)

Hermine has claimed two lives, one in Florida and one in North Carolina, after making landfall as a Category 1 hurricane in the Big Bend area of Florida early Friday morning. It became the first hurricane to make landfall in the Sunshine State in nearly 11 years.

The storm brought life-threatening heavy rainfall and damaging winds to Georgia and the Carolinas before heading north into the mid-Atlantic states and the Northeast.

Hundreds of thousands in Florida and Georgia lost power during the height of the storm as trees and power lines fell. Coastal communities reported feet of storm surge flooding, and roads along the coast were chewed up by the powerful waves. "Severe damage" in Taylor County, Florida, was reported by the Perry Police Department.

Both states declared states of emergency, as did Maryland and Virginia as Hermine made its way up the coast. Officials in Delaware, New Jersey and New York all closed beaches to swimmers at points over the Labor Day due to dangerous rip currents and beach erosion.
