Hurricane Julio Recap

Unlike Iselle, Julio passed well to the north of the Hawaiian Islands.

Julio formed on August 4 and became a tropical storm later that same day. Julio then became the eastern Pacific season's fifth hurricane during the early morning hours of August 6. It is also the fourth major hurricane of the 2014 eastern Pacific hurricane season, having strengthened to a Category 3 hurricane on August 7.

Julio then gave it one last hurrah as a minimal hurricane on August 12 and 13, before being downgraded to a tropical storm late on August 13.

Julio weakened into a remnant low on August 15 due to hostile wind shear and colder water.

In reliable records dating to 1950, only two other tropical cyclones tracked to the northeast of the Hawaiian islands as hurricanes: Fernanda (1993) and Iwa (1982), according to senior meteorologist Stu Ostro.
