A combination of storm surge and large, battering waves from Hurricane Matthew altered a part of the northeast Florida coastline.

Between St. Augustine and Palm Coast, a small new inlet was carved out by the powerful water pounding the coast.

The new inlet can be seen in this before-and-after image. A NOAA aircraft taking aerial photography after the storm this weekend illustrated what the National Weather Service confirmed in an official survey.



NOAA's imagery also gave us a bird's-eye view of the damage done to A1A in Flagler Beach.

Farther north, you can see where a home was taken out in Edisto Beach, South Carolina, by Matthew. In addition, the image shows the sand that was spread inland from the coast onto the road.
