Hurricane Gonzalo, the second major hurricane of the 2014 Atlantic season, made landfall over the island of Bermuda Friday evening at 8:30 p.m. Sunday morning, the storm was passing near Newfoundland.

Gonzalo is weakening and is now a Category 1 hurricane with 85 mph maximum sustained winds.

According to Bermuda's utility provider, BELCO, as of late Saturday night, there were still over 13,000 customers without power.

At 7:40 a.m. local time Saturday,The Gazette reported that "barely a road" on the island was passable because of downed trees and other debris. "Important things need to be done and we encourage everyone to stay off the road. The roads are so littered with debris and hardly any roads are two-way,"  Police Commissioner Michael DeSilva said Saturday morning. "There’s no way we can have traffic trying to travel in two directions."

Gonzalo started to impact Bermuda as a Category 3 hurricane Friday, the strongest storm to hit the island since 2003's Hurricane Fabian. Gonzalo already caused destruction across the Caribbean, albeit as a much weaker storm, killing one person in St. Maarten and damaging homes and property in Antigua.

Last week, Tropical Storm Fay passed over Bermuda with maximum sustained wind speeds of 70 mph, damaging homes and knocking out power to most of the island's 80,000 residents. More than 1,000 people were without power even before Gonzalo started impacting the island.
