Tropical Storm Alberto Recap

image

Tropical Storm Alberto formed off the Southeast coast on May 19 with top sustained winds initially at 45 mph.

Dates: May 19-22
Peak Intensity: Briefly 60 mph on May 19
- Earliest-forming tropical storm in the Atlantic since 2003 when Ana developed in April
- 23rd pre-June named Atlantic Basin storm on record since 1851
- First time with pre-season named storms in Atlantic & eastern Pacific basins

Its intensity increased briefly to 60 mph during that evening based on information from a ship that was located near the center of Alberto.

The storm then decreased in intensity May 20 into May 21 and was downgraded to a tropical depression late on May 21.  On the morning of May 22, the final advisory was issued for Alberto as strong vertical wind shear took its toll on the system.

Since Alberto was very small and stayed offshore, the system had minimal impacts on the Southeast coast. Some rainbands brushed the coast, but were of no significance.  Otherwise, Alberto helped to increase the risk of rip currents for coastal areas.
