Damaging Hailstorms Have Cost Billions of Dollars in Spring 2016

The southern Lincoln, Nebraska, metro area was pelted by hailstones as large as softballs Monday, making it the latest in a rash of major hailstorms to hit several cities from the Plains to the East this spring. In some cases, the damage has led to billions of dollars in insured losses.

According to local reports, homes and vehicles were damaged by the hail in Lincoln on Monday. Large divots were also left behind on a golf course from the impact of the enormous hailstones.

Below is a look back at other recent hailstorms that have also caused significant damage in recent months.

Washington D.C. Metro Hit by Hail as Large as Baseballs on May 2

On May 2, thunderstorms produced hail as large as tennis balls and baseballs in parts of the Washington, D.C. metro area. The Maryland towns of Rockville and St. Charles saw the largest hailstones.

Hail this large is not very common in Maryland. There have been only 18 reports of hail baseball-sized or larger (2.75 inches in diameter) in the state of Maryland since 1950.

Indianapolis Pelted by Hen-Egg Sized Hail on May 1

A day before Washington D.C. was hit, the southern Indianapolis metro saw hailstones as large as hen eggs May 1. For reference, hen-egg sized hail has a diameter of two inches.

The combination of hail and other debris clogged storm drains, leading to some flash flooding, according to fox59.com.

Golf-Ball Sized Hail Causes Damage in Fort Smith, Arkansas, on April 29

Fort Smith Police told 4029 News that there was extensive hail damage in the southern part of the city, including car windshields smashed out. This impressive video shows how fierce the hailstorm was in the city.

San Antonio Struck Twice in Two Weeks During April

The first hailstorm to hit San Antonio in April hammered the northern metro area April 12 with hail up to 4.5 inches in diameter, or the size of grapefruits.

Homes and vehicles suffered extensive damage, according to media reports. Police told WOAI-TV the hailstorm led to windshield damage for several of their cruisers, and some residents also said the large hailstones knocked out their windows.

A second hailstorm on April 25 swept through western parts of San Antonio and impacted some of the same locations that were hit on April 12.

Some areas saw tennis ball or baseball-sized hail, though overall the storms were not as impactful as what San Antonio experienced earlier in April.

Supercell Hammers North Texas on April 11

A supercell thunderstorm spread a long swath of damaging hail through north Texas on April 11 as it moved just to the north of Dallas-Fort Worth.

The town of Wylie, Texas, was especially hard hit with hail up to the size of softballs. The combination of hail and strong winds from the storm shattered the windows of some homes, while cars and the roofs of homes were also severely damage.

The combined insured losses from the hailstorms April 10-15 in Texas was $2.5 billion, according to meteorologist Steve Bowen. This include both the April 11 north Texas hailstorm and the April 12 San Antonio storm.

Dallas-Fort Worth Wakes Up To St. Patrick's Day Hailstorm

On the morning of St. Patrick's Day (March 17), parts of the Dallas-Fort Worth metro were awoken by thunderstorms that produced hail to the size of golf balls and tennis balls. 

Some cars were damaged by the hail and had their windshields smashed in the Fort Worth area. A total of 23 ambulances were taken out of service at MedStar in Fort Worth due to hail damage, according to a report submitted to the National Weather Service.

Several birds were killed by the hailstones at the Fort Worth Zoo, according to Fox4News.com.

The West Division of the Fort Worth police department suffered roof damage during the storms, resulting in water damage in their office.
