1 Dead as Severe Weather Targets the South, California

At least one person is dead after a low pressure system moved into Southern California Sunday night bringing damaging winds and thunderstorms. NBC San Diego reports that one person was killed in Pacific Beach when a giant tree fell onto four nearby cars. The victim was walking past and was crushed by the tree. The incident took place on the 3900 block of Ingraham Street.

That same system threatens the South this week with a potential outbreak of thunderstorms and some possible torandoes.

These are the latest impacts:

The National Weather Service office in Oxnard, California, reported thunderstorm wind damage west of Santa Paula that took down two or three trees, trapping six cars near the intersection of Briggs and Faulkner roads.

High Winds have left thousands without power in San Diego. San Diego Gas & Electric tells The Weather Channel that as of 4:20 p.m. at least 40,711 customers were without power due to 37 weather-related active primary outages.

In Los Angeles, flash flooding was reported in the Burbank area at Interstate 5 and Roscoe Boulevard. In Monterey Park, wind gusts blew a roof off of a home and onto nearby powerlines near South Ditman Avenue. The National Weather Service also reported several downed trees close to Mulholland Highway and Highway 2.

Near Santa Barbara, California, there were reports of flash flooding with mud and rocks across highway 154.

Locally heavy rain and an isolated severe thunderstorm are likely in southwestern California as low pressure moves throughout the area Sunday night.
