Tornadoes Are More Powerful Than We Realize

Damaging storms rocked western Texas Wednesday afternoon and evening, one of which packed hail large enough to knock out a car's windows.

A vehicle in Sierra Blanca sustained heavy damage to its back window during a severe storm that rolled through the town Wednesday afternoon. Hailstones as large as two and a half inches in diameter fell on the town – the largest hail reported in the Lone Star State during the afternoon hours.

"A thunderstorm produced hail as large as tennis balls as it moved eastward through the Trans-Pecos region of west Texas," said weather.com meteorologist Jonathan Belles. "In some spots, hail accumulated to three inches deep. Spotty severe thunderstorms are expected to continue through the evening."

Before the storms arrived in Texas, hail was reported in parts of New Mexico, and it accumulated rapidly.

No injuries have been reported from this round of storms.
