Tornadoes Are More Powerful Than We Realize


Hail was the story for the early portion of the second week of April. Very large hailstones were observed early this week in portions of Texas, damaging cars and shattering windows on homes.

Below is a highlight of some of the storm reports received Sunday through Wednesday, April 10-13.

Wednesday's Storm Reports

Wednesday was a relatively tame day of severe weather compared to previous days, although gusty thunderstorms did affect coastal Louisiana in the morning. Power lines and a FEMA trailer were blown down near Pointe a la Hache, Louisiana by a possible, brief tornado.

Tuesday's Storm Reports

A landspout-type tornado briefly touched down near Greeley, Colorado in the early afternoon. 

Very large hailstones up to three inches in diameter were reported across Bexar County Tuesday night. Tuesday night, hail larger than baseballs was reported in Helotes and near Leon Valley, both in south-central Texas, marking the second day in a row of very large hail in portions of the Lone Star State.

Monday's Storm Reports

Over 40 reports of large hail, some up to softball size hail (4.25 inch diameter) pelted a swath of north Texas Monday afternoon and evening just north of Dallas and Ft. Worth, shattering car windshields and windows on homes.

Texarkana, Arkansas reported wind damage with numerous trees down and some street flooding and a wind gust of 70 mph was measured near Frisco, Texas. There were also numerous reports of roadways flooded in Louisiana and Mississippi, including Jackson, Mississippi. Water was also entering homes in Monroe, Louisiana Monday night.

Sunday's Storm Reports

This latest round of severe weather first fired up in the southern Plains Sunday. Hail up to 2.5 inches (tennis ball size) was reported near Ralls, Dickens, and Guthrie, Texas. On Sunday afternoon, golf ball size hail was reported near Crowell, Texas and ping pong ball size hail was measured near Slaton, Texas. A wind gust of 65 mph was also measured near Vernon, Texas, and a gust of 60 mph was reported near Hobart, Oklahoma.
