Damaging Winds Slam New England After Tornadoes Tear Through the South in Mid-February (RECAP)

Several tornadoes impacted the South from Monday afternoon into Monday night on the warm side of Winter Storm Olympia. This includes an EF3 tornado, the strongest of 2016 so far, that caused extensive damage in parts of Century, Florida. Tornadoes later impacted South Florida and the Outer Banks of North Carolina on Tuesday.

Strong, damaging winds associated with Olympia blew through the mid-Atlantic, New York City metro area and eastern New England on Tuesday.Winds were strong enough to rip shingles off a building in Philadelphia and downed trees in Pittsgrove Township, New Jersey. 

A band of heavy rain accompanied by gusty winds pushed through the New York City area mid-afternoon Tuesday. Winds gusted to 51 mph at LaGuardia airport just before 3 p.m. EST. New Jersey's Teterboro airport recorded a wind gust to 52 mph around 2:30 p.m. EST. Farmingdale, New York, saw a wind gust to 54 mph at 3 p.m. EST.

Some of the strongest winds were reported across eastern Massachusetts Tuesday afternoon and coastal Maine Tuesday evening. Wind gusts reached 71 mph at Pembroke, Maine and 68 mph at Matinicus, Massachusetts.

In total, there were 192 reports (after multiple reports were filtered) of high winds, wind damage or large hail Monday into Tuesday. As of Tuesday night, The Weather Channel's severe weather expert Dr. Greg Forbes said the preliminary tornado count was 20, with 15 of those tornadoes occurring on Monday.

A Sampling of Tornado Reports

  • An EF2 tornado destroyed a house near Beauregard, Mississippi on Monday.
  • A tornado, rated EF1, caused 2 injuries in Walthall County, Mississippi on Monday.
  • An EF3 tornado ripped through the Century, Florida area on Monday, causing three injuries.
  • A fire department was destoyed near Red Level, Alabama by a likely tornado.
  • Early Tuesday, two EF1 tornadoes struck South Florida, one each in Broward and Miami-Dade counties.
  • An EF1 tornado struck the Davis area in Carteret County, North Carolina on Tuesday, knocking down power lines.
