Typhoon Koppu (Lando) Lashes the Philippines (PHOTOS)

Typhoon Koppu, known locally as Lando, made landfall as a super typhoon in the Philippines Sunday and drenched the country’s main northern island of Luzon for days. Despite being downgraded to a tropical storm late Monday, Koppu remains a deadly threat to the archipelago, creating the risk of life-threatening flash floods and mudslides.

At least 35 people have died after the arrival of Koppu. Rain bands have lashed parts of the country with torrential downpours, while the core of strong winds moved into the central portion of Luzon, AP reports.

Sunday local police and military officials worked to rescue those trapped in flooded villages throughout some of the nation's hardest hit provinces. Both Aurora and Nueva Ecija were among those inundated by floodwaters.

The flooding in Nueva Ecija forced residents onto their rooftops Sunday afternoon, reports ABS-CBN News. Certain areas were so flooded that rescuers were unable to reach residents.

The NDRRMC reported complete power outages in nine provinces, potentially affecting more than nine million people - equal to nearly 10 percent of the entire population of the Philippines and nearly 20 percent of the population of Luzon.

On Tuesday, government officials warned evacuated citizens that more rainfall could trigger additional deadly flooding, and despite their attempts to return home, authorities were working to keep those evacuees away from vulnerable areas.
