New Storm to Spread Snow, Ice From Rockies to Plains, Midwest and Northeast This Week

As many as 70 vehicles were involved in a major crash on Interstate 35 near Ames, Iowa, Monday afternoon, the Associated Press reported. One person was killed and at least five were critically injured, officials told KCCI.com. The highway had reopened in both directions just before 6:30 p.m. local time Monday.

Roads in central Iowa were snow-covered at the time of the crash, and up to 7 inches of snow had accumulated in Ames through Monday afternoon. Ames is located about 35 miles north of Des Moines.

Wapello, Iowa, had picked up 8.5 inches of snow as of early Monday evening while 7 inches had been reported in Altona, Illinois, and Viola, Illinois.

Quad City International Airport in Moline, Illinois, received 3.4 inches of snow by early Monday evening, and 3 inches had accumulated in Des Moines, Iowa, making it the first time Des Moines had seen 3-plus inches of snow in one day since Dec. 28, 2015.
