A familiar weather pattern remains locked in place east of the Rockies, featuring an upper-level trough, or southward dip in the jet stream, spanning across the northern tier of the United States.

With cold air locked in place north of that jet stream dip, any low-pressure system has the potential to produce snow or ice along and north of its track. This is currently the case as yet another system slides through the northern Plains, Midwest and central Appalachians.

Winter weather advisories have been issued by the National Weather Service from parts of the Dakotas to western and southern Minnesota and northern Iowa.

A winter storm warning is in effect for portions of northeastern South Dakota, including Aberdeen and Watertown.

Into Sunday Night

  • The chance of snow will stretch from the Dakotas eastward into Ohio, northeastern Kentucky, West Virginia, far western Virginia and extreme northwestern North Carolina into Sunday night.
  • A mix of rain and snow is currently anticipated farther south in parts of southern and eastern Illinois, western and southern Indiana, southwestern Ohio and north-central Kentucky.

Monday Into Tuesday

  • Monday, some light snow may linger in portions of the upper Mississippi Valley and Great Lakes, as well as in the central Appalachians.
  • A band of light snow, mixed with rain in some spots, may affect areas from the upper Ohio Valley to Pennsylvania and northwestern New Jersey on Monday night.

How Much Snow?

Up to 5 inches of snow is possible from portions of the Dakotas to southwestern Minnesota and northern Iowa.

Light snow is currently anticipated in other parts of the upper Midwest and into the central Appalachians, where only a dusting to a few inches may accumulate.

Additionally, gusty winds are possible in the northern Plains, which would reduce visibility and lead to some travel impacts.
