The historic, widespread, long-lasting winter storm has already blanketed parts of the South and Plains with ice and snow, and will target millions more in the Midwest and Northeast through Monday.

The genesis of Winter Storm Fern came from an unusually low latitude off the coast of California and western Mexico around January 22. The low pressure system dipped southward and made landfall on Mexico's Baja California peninsula late on January 23 while spreading deep subtropical moisture across Mexico and the southern U.S.

The Hurricane Hunters investigated the system in the Pacific to learn about its moisture, position and track before reaching Mexico.

So far, up to 8 inches of snow with sleet has been reported in and near the Little Rock, Arkansas, metro area, where cars have been sliding off the road over the last few hours. The highest snowfall totals so far surpass a foot in New Mexico.

Almost three-quarter inch of ice accumulation was reported near Hall Summit, Louisiana, southeast of Shreveport. Icing, with some downed tree limbs has been observed as far south as Fredericksburg, Texas, in the Hill Country.
