Winter Storm Helena continued to cause havoc in the northeast on Sunday.

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper says a car skidded off an icy interstate, killing one person.

The death Sunday morning in Montgomery County south of Asheboro is the first reported death from this weekend's winter storm in the state.

The winter storm has killed at least six people in the West and South and has brought 5.1 inches of snow to New York City, with a 7.5 inch high reported at Kennedy Airport in Queens.

Motorists in Virginia faced a toll hike of $30 on Interstate 495 during the height of the storm. The increase was blamed on Virginia Department of Transportation salt trucks, reports the AP.
