Winter Storm Kayla slammed the Plains and West to kick off February, dumping feet of snow in some areas while crippling travel with blizzard conditions in others.

The storm shut down several major interstates in Nebraska, Kansas and Colorado on Tuesday, and authorities advised all travelers to stay home if they could. More than 40 inches of snow fell in parts of Colorado, but it was the strong winds and heavy snow to the east that were causing problems on Tuesday.

In Minnesota, hundreds of accidents and slide-offs were reported on state roads, and the DOT decided to close all highways in southern parts of the state Tuesday afternoon and evening due to the poor conditions.

Tens of thousands were without power in Nebraska and Iowa on Tuesday as strong sustained winds brought down power lines. Snow drifts as high as six feet were also reported as this winter storm battered the Plains states.

Kayla also caused a large pileup that closed Interstate 80 near the California/Nevada state line as the storm got rolling. Hundreds of flight cancelations were reported Monday morning, 450 of those out of Denver International Airport.

The photos above are some of the most notable images we’ve gathered from the second winter storm of the new year.
