Winter Storm Leo Brought Snow to the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes After Pummeling California (RECAP)

Winter Storm Leo brought snow and flooding rain to California Jan. 22-23, and then became a snowmaker for the Rockies, Plains and Midwest Jan. 24-25.

Leo dumped locally more than 10 inches of snow on parts of Nebraska, southern South Dakota, northern Iowa and southern Minnesota Jan. 24-25. A few spots in Nebraska saw 20 inches of snow.

Thundersnow was reported from Leo in southeast Minnesota the night of Jan. 24, and near Madison, Wisconsin, the morning of Jan. 25.

Jan. 22-23, Leo brought heavy snow, high winds and flooding rainfall to California.

Winter Storm Leo Reports

Icy roads created hazardous travel in parts of the Plains and upper Midwest Jan. 24-25.

A band of heavy snow forced a closure on Highway 8 through the San Diego County Mountains the evening of Jan. 23.

Blowing and drifting snow caused low visibility in the White Mountains of Arizona the evening of Jan. 23, causing some cars to slide off the road.

The heavy snow and strong winds in the Sierra Nevada forced a closure of Interstate 80 the night of Jan. 22.

More than two dozen mudslides and rockslides were reported in California on Jan. 22, including one that two vehicles became stuck in near Wrightwood. Also, some roads experienced flooding in the Golden State. Swift water rescues were reported near Crestline, Sun City, Pedley and Costa Mesa. In southern California, high winds downed some trees.

Snowfall in the Sierra Nevada has piled up in feet. Parts of the Reno, Nevada, area saw more than a half foot of snow.

  • Arizona: 16.0 inches in Jeddito; 9.4 inches in Flagstaff
  • California: 60.0 inches at June Mountain Ski Area
  • Colorado: 25.5 inches at Coal Bank Pass
  • Idaho: 19.3 inches near Holbrook
  • Illinois: 1.0 inch near Stockton
  • Iowa: 14.5 inches in Hawarden; 14.0 inches in Hartley; 13.0 inches in Mason City
  • Michigan: 3.0 inches near Suttons Bay
  • Minnesota: 11.0 inches in Stewartville; 8.6 inches in Rochester; 3.4 inches in Minneapolis-St. Paul
  • Montana: 5.5 inches near Island Park; 2 inches in Cut Bank; 1.3 inches near Great Falls; 1.0 inch near Missoula
  • Nebraska: up to 22.0 inches near Merriman; 20.0 inches in Spencer
  • Nevada: 60.5 inches near Incline Village; 7.6 inches in Reno
  • New Mexico: 20.0 inches near Los Alamos
  • South Dakota: 18.0 inches in Pickstown; 16 inches in Yankton; 8.0 inches near Sioux Falls
  • Utah: 8.0 inches in Vernal
  • Wisconsin: 10.2 inches in Plymouth; 9.4 inches near La Crosse; 5.2 inches in Madison
  • Wyoming: 19.5 inches at Star Valley Ranch; 19 inches in Jackson Hole; 16.1 inches near Lander
