Winter Storm Lexi: One Dead, Thousands Without Power

Winter Storm Lexi began delivering a quick-hitting stripe of snow from the coastal mid-Atlantic into southern and eastern New England Friday, causing early morning travel issues for commuters and taking at least one life

A six-year-old child died after a being hit by a falling tree limb in the backyard of her family's home in Canton, Massachusetts. Medical crews arrived on the scene shortly before 2 p.m. and reported that the child still had a pulse. Emergency personnel transported the child to Good Samaritan Hospital in Brockton where she later died, according to Fox 25. Police urged parents all throughout Massachusetts to keep their children indoors as heavy snow and ice caused tree limbs to fall all throughout the day Friday.

Another Canton resident, 48-year-old Thomas Gunning, was also struck by a fallen tree branch, reports WCVB. Friday evening the father of three was cleaning the hockey rink in his backyard when the branch struck him, causing severe injuries.

As of Friday afternoon, more than 600 flights have been canceled, a majority of which involve airports in New York and Boston, according to FlightAware.

Connecticut

An estimated 58,961 Eversource Energy customers were affected by power outages, according to the utility's website. 

Electric company UI reported that it currently has 1,884 customers without power

Tractor trailers became stuck on eastbound Interstate 84 in Willington, according to NBC Connecticut. There were also reports of spin-outs

A downed tree fell across part of the Wilbur Cross Parkway in North Haven, shutting down the southbound side of the road near Exit 63, according to NBC Connecticut. 

The Department of Motor Vehicles canceled all road tests scheduled for Friday from 8 a.m. to noon.

Massachusetts

48-year-old Thomas Gunning, also a resident of Canton, was struck by a fallen tree branch Friday evening, reports WCVB. The father of three was cleaning the hockey rink in his backyard when the branch struck him, causing severe injuries. Previous reports stated he succumbed to his injuries Saturday morning, but Canton Police Chief Ken Berkowitz said they received news that Gunning is alive, but remains in grave critical condition.

Police in Bedford warned residents via Twitter to watch out for trees on power lines. The department shared a photo in which heavy snow and knocked a power line and a tree into each other, sparking a fire near a local middle school.

According to Eversource, 36,595 of the utility's customers remain without power

National Grid reports that 579 of their customers remain without power.

Police said there have multiple single car spin-outs on Route 24, between I-95 and Airport Road, according to WPRI. Several school districts have been closed.

A Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) vehicle was crushed by a downed tree, reports WCVB. 

The MBTA saw further problems as a large tree toppled over onto an overheard wire at Chestnut Hill, disrupting service on the Green Line D branch service. Shuttles had to be dispatched in both directions until the tree can be cleared and regular service can resume. 

Winter storm warnings have been extended until 5 p.m. Friday. 

New York City

Alternate side parking in New York City has been suspended for snow removal, according to NBC New York. A winter storm warning lasting til noon is in effect for Suffolk County and a winter weather advisory is in effect for the rest of the tri-state, excluding Dutchess, Ulster, Sullivan, Sussex, Warren and Pike counties. 

Though there have been no flight cancelations or major delays announced at the John F. Kennedy Airport, social media users shared photos of snow coming down and coating the planes and runways. 

Rhode Island

The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) detoured five of its routes Friday due to the weather conditions, according to a release. Routes 14, 27, 49, 64 and 87 were rerouted and riders should expect some delays. Further details can be found here

Downed trees collapsed on top of wires in Burrillville, according to NWS. 

As of 11:30 a.m., approximately 5,340 people were without power, according to WPRI. 

New Hampshire

At least 200 schools were closed due to the snow, reports the Associated Press. Most of the closings are in the southern part of the state.

Philadelphia

A downed tree in Delaware County trapped two people inside of their home, reports CBS 3. The incident happened early Friday morning after the tree crashed into the roof. Firefighters are having difficulty reaching the occupants.
