Flash Flooding Swamps Central, East Texas, Louisiana, Including Austin, San Antonio, Beaumont

Heavy rain triggered flash flooding into parts of central, east Texas and southern Louisiana Thursday night into Friday.

More than 5 inches of rain was reported northeast of Austin. The National Weather Service reports more than 2.5 inches fell in one hour in Pflugerville.

All this rain in a short period of time brought street flooding and closed roads. There were reports of vehicles under water and people were rescued from their cars. A few homes and apartments also had flooding.

Heavy Rain In Central Texas

This happened less than 24 hours after flash flooding shut down Interstate 35 north of Dallas-Ft. Worth.

Some low water crossings are still closed as of early Friday morning and drivers should use caution, as roads may have debris from the flooding.

A cluster of thunderstorms developed along a frontal boundary that is slowing moving east. The slow movement of these storms focused the heavy rainfall around the Austin area, bringing the flash flooding.

The rain has now moved into eastern Texas and Louisiana which prompted flash flood warnings.

Multiple roads were closed in New Iberia, Louisiana due to street flooding from the heavy rain and a flooding swamped service roads along the Eastex Freeway in Beaumont, Texas, where 6.66 inches of rain fell in just three hours.

There is good news as dry conditions will return in time for the weekend for much of central Texas.
