Houston, Austin Hit with Ice; Freezing Rain Creates Treacherous Morning Commutes

A weak disturbance running into lingering cold air in the lower levels of the atmosphere has led to freezing rain and some sleet in parts of central and southeast Texas early Tuesday morning.

More than a quarter of an inch of ice accumulation has been reported in San Felipe (west of Houston) with large tree limbs breaking. Up to a quarter of an inch of ice was reported in the The Woodlands (north of Houston) with some broken tree limbs.

The ice has led to some icy roadways, particularly on bridges and overpasses. In addition, there has been just enough ice accumulation to cause scattered power outages. According to CenterPoint Energy, more than 34,000 customers were without power in Harris, Austin, Fort Bend, Montgomery and Waller Counties as of 6 a.m. CT. The majority of the outages were in Harris County.

The freezing rain threat is expected to end late in the morning as temperature rise above freezing and the precipitation moves east.
