Commuters in Langston, Ala. have bragging rights for their state: the northeastern town has the longest commute in the state. On average, drivers spend 46 minutes one-way to work, compared to the state average of 24.09 minutes.

A number of things can impact the amount of time drivers spend commuting to work: traffic patterns, day of the week, season of the year and, yes, even the weather. Some commutes can fluctuate drastically for any combination of those reasons while others are just destined to be long regardless of outside factors.

In March, Los Angeles was named the city with the worst evening commute due to traffic congestion, but it doesn't take the crown of longest commute in California according to analysis of data compiled by Sperling's Best Places, which looked at commute time by car, mass transit, bicylces, walking and carpooling. That distinction goes to a small town in Northern California called Dorrington where the average one-way commute is 129 minutes. That means that commuters from that town spend almost four and a half hours just getting to and from work each day.

And Dorrington doesn't even have it the worst in the country -- that title belongs to Harwood, Mo., which has an average one-way commute of 131 minutes. In contrast, the average commute for the country is a palatable 25 minutes.
