Unsettled Plains, Midwest, East Expected for Memorial Day 2016 (FORECAST)

Memorial Day 2016 could be filled with stormy weather for parts of the Plains and East, but warmer temperatures have also arrived for many, just in time for the holiday.

In the West, however, temperatures will be a bit below average with some showers in the forecast. Temperatures will be particularly below average on Memorial Day in Montana.

AAA expects the volume of automotive travel this Memorial Day weekend to be the second-heaviest on record with 38 million travelers.

With that in mind, here's what travelers can expect this holiday.

Memorial Day

Overview

  • Wet Areas: Much of the East Coast from New England to the Carolinas may see showers and thunderstorms, courtesty of a cold front and moisture from Bonnie. Most of the Plains and Rockies, as well, will see thunderstorms.
  • Dry Areas: The West Coast and most of the Desert Southwest will enjoy a dry day. Much of the Great Lakes, Ohio Valley and Deep South will also be dry.
  • High Temperatures: Highs mainly in the 80s are expected across the South and Midwest, although portions of the Deep South will rise into the 90s. Temperatures will reach the 70s and 80s in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, as well as the northern Plains. The West and the Rockies will have highs mainly in the 60s and 70s, with 50s in some of the higher elevations. The Desert Southwest again will see temperatures rise well into the 90s, and the interior deserts of California may reach the century mark.

Major highways impacted:

  • I-95 from South Carolina to New England (locally heavy rain possible)
  • I-35 from Oklahoma to Minnesota (showers and thunderstorms)
  • I-90 from Montana to southwestern Minnesota (showers and thunderstorms)
