According to the American Road & Transportation Builders Association, approximately 1.42 million miles, or more than one-third of all road miles in the United States, are still unpaved gravel or dirt roads. A large portion of commuters, then -- especially in the heartland -- contend with the challenges presented by dirt roads, including turbulence and obstruction of visibility.

Instead of getting frustrated with dirt roads, one artist uses it as inspiration. Having lived on a dirt road for 20 years, Scott Wade developed an artistic medium all his own. Wade, the creator of dirtycarart.com, took his experience of doodling on his own constantly dusty windshield and turned it into a genre of art: dirty car art.

Each of Wade’s pieces takes about one-and-a-half to three hours. Some have taken him as little as six minutes and some, six hours. The ephemerality of the medium excites him. He says he’s never sad when rain comes and washes away his work because “that means I get to do another one!”

If you ask Wade which piece is his favorite, he says, “The next one!” So take a look at every next one in the slideshow above.
