No Dorm Parties for These Freshmen: U.S. Colleges with the Most First-Year Commuters

College tuition is at an all-time high, and student housing costs only worsen matters. Over the last decade, between the 2003-2004 and 2013-2014 years, the cost of education at public, four-year schools rose more drastically than it had in previous decades. There is one short reason for the dramatic increase.

According to the College Board, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping students navigate the collegiate system, the inclusion of mandatory room and board in first year tuitions accounts for skyrocketing national tuition numbers.

Some universities are bucking the rising tuition trend and eliminating the stigma of freshmen commuting. According to the U.S. News Short List, 12 institutions top the list for freshmen living off campus and commuting. At each university on the list, more than 60 percent of the first-year students choose to live off campus and commute to school.
